Our Mission

Establishing Community Integrated Living Arrangements for Illinois families

Our Strategic Focus

We're pleased to announce a strategic shift in our organization's focus. We are now directing our efforts towards the establishment of a Community Integrated Living Arrangement (CILA).

Your support, whether in terms of time, expertise, or resources, is integral to the success of this initiative. We look forward to your collaboration as we navigate this new and impactful chapter for our organization.

Why AFL's Focus Changed

Delving into the comprehensive requirements for ensuring a high-quality life and establishing long-term objectives for a young person with intellectual and developmental disabilities can be overwhelming for the average family. Navigating "the system" and understanding the array of programs and benefits available is essential.

Furthermore, individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities have a diverse spectrum of needs, often complex and varied. The assistance we initially envisioned providing proved to be inadequate in its scope, considering the challenges that became apparent.

Why a CILA and What Is That?

Over 12,500 families in Illinois cannot find proper housing for their family members. The burden on families to manage their care is overwhelming and stressful, especially with the lack of CILAs available.

Community Integrated Living Arrangement (CILA) is a living arrangement for adults (age 18 and older) in a group home, family home, or apartment where 8 or fewer unrelated adults with developmental disabilities live under supervision of a community developmental services agency.

How Will AFL Establish a CILA?

We are committed to raising the necessary funds to establish a Community Integrated Living Arrangement (CILA), which involves acquiring a property. Once obtained, the property will be donated to a local organization, akin to Little Friends, capable of staffing and managing the CILA.

Drawing inspiration from models such as Little Friends, we recognize the importance of partnering with organizations possessing the expertise to navigate state regulations, certifications, and guidelines, ensuring a seamless and compliant operation.

What Is the Anticipated Cost?

We aim to secure funding for an appropriate home in DuPage County, potentially Naperville, with a target cost in the vicinity of $500,000, similar to Little Friends' recent property acquisition.

Is This a Common Practice?

There are instances where homes or funding for homes are donated for specific purposes, such as community projects or charitable initiatives. Nonprofit organizations or community-driven campaigns may seek donations to acquire properties for causes like housing for individuals with special needs, as described in the context of a Community Integrated Living Arrangement (CILA).

The success of such endeavors often relies on the generosity and support of individuals, businesses, or philanthropic entities committed to making a positive impact in their communities.
